Craft Wire

Craft wire serves as the foundational structure for each sculpture, offering a balance of lightness and sturdiness capable of supporting mixed materials; the wire gauge should increase proportionally with the sculpture's scale.

Fabric

Fabric, chosen for its thin and absorbent qualities, facilitates watercolor absorption and lightweight concealment of rough cut edges around the sculpture.

Battery Operated String Lights

Battery-operated String Lights are intricately woven around the wireframe before being concealed by fabric layers, providing adjustable illumination for diverse exhibition environments.

Felt

Felt, easily accessible and manipulable, is utilized for crafting prominent accents in sculptures, adding detail without requiring extensive wireframe sculpting.

Pliers

Pliers, essential for wire manipulation, alleviate finger soreness and expedite the bending process, enhancing efficiency during sculpture assembly.

Watercolor

Watercolor, a cost-effective dye alternative, eliminates concerns of bleeding typically associated with fabric dyes, as these pieces do not require washing.

Yarn and other mixed materials

Yarn and miscellaneous mixed materials, integral to the mixed media ethos of the project, encourage the incorporation of unconventional elements, exemplified by the use of yarn, beads, and disposable chopsticks in creating distinctive visual finishes.

Process:

Step 1: Sketch out the shape of your piece and imagine the wireframe from all dimensions:

Before diving into construction, take a moment to visualize your sculpture. Sketching helps you plan the overall shape and proportions of your piece. Consider how it will look from different angles and perspectives to ensure a cohesive design. Imagine the wireframe structure that will support your sculpture, envisioning how it will provide stability and form.

Step 2: Cut, shape, and connect wires:

With your design in mind, begin crafting the wireframe. Use wire cutters to trim the wire to the desired lengths, then shape it according to your sketch. You may need to bend or twist the wire to achieve the desired contours and angles. Assemble the pieces together, securing them with wire connectors or by twisting the wire ends together.

Step 3: Weave fairy lights, distributing LEDs, and glue:

Once the wireframe is in place, it's time to add illumination. Weave fairy lights around the wire structure, distributing the LEDs evenly to ensure uniform brightness. Use a suitable adhesive, such as E6000 glue, to secure the lights in place. Take care to conceal the wires and connectors, creating a seamless integration with the wireframe.

Step 4: Cut, paint, dry, and glue on fabric:

With the base structure and lighting in place, it's time to add fabric to your sculpture. Cut the fabric into pieces that fit the contours of your wireframe, allowing for overlap and seam allowances. If desired, paint the fabric to add color or texture, ensuring it complements the overall design. Allow the paint to dry completely before attaching the fabric to the wireframe using a suitable adhesive, such as fabric glue or hot glue.

Step 5: Cut and glue on felt accents, then final mixed materials:

Enhance the visual appeal of your sculpture by adding felt accents. Cut the felt into shapes and sizes that complement your design, such as leaves, flowers, or geometric patterns. Glue the felt accents onto the fabric-covered wireframe, taking care to arrange them in visually pleasing arrangements. Finally, incorporate any additional mixed materials, such as beads, yarn, or found objects, to add texture and interest to your piece.

Step 6: Done, and now you have your very own lantern!

Step back and admire your handiwork. Your sculpture is now complete, ready to illuminate and enchant any space it inhabits. Whether displayed indoors or outdoors, your lantern is sure to captivate viewers with its unique blend of craftsmanship and creativity. Enjoy the warm glow and sense of accomplishment that comes from bringing your artistic vision to life.
